Raising Concerns Over Andy Croft’s Appointment
Why I Am Deeply Concerned About Andy Croft’s Appointment as Associate Rector at Ps & Gs (St Paul's & St George's) Church, Edinburgh
The appointment of church leaders is one of the most significant decisions a congregation can make. These roles demand individuals who embody transparency, accountability, and the highest ethical standards - qualities that ensure trust and safety within the church community. This is why I felt compelled to express my concerns about the recent appointment of Andy Croft as Associate Rector at Ps and Gs Church in Edinburgh.
Andy Croft’s previous role as senior pastor at Soul Survivor Watford, where he resigned following allegations about his handling of serious complaints involving Mike Pilavachi, raises critical questions about his suitability for a senior leadership position. Additionally, Croft was found guilty of complicity in failing to act appropriately in response to these allegations, further intensifying concerns about his ability to safeguard the wellbeing of a congregation. This is not about denying someone the opportunity for redemption or growth; it is about ensuring the safety, trust, and wellbeing of the congregation.
In their response to my concerns, Ps and Gs Church emphasised that Andy’s appointment followed a “full and rigorous process,” which included a window of advertising and inviting applications, interviews with their Vestry and Staffing Group, conversations with senior clergy in the Scottish Episcopal Church and the Church of England and the collection of multiple references. They also highlighted the role of prayer and discernment over a five-month period, which led them to believe that Andy was the right choice for the position.
While I respect the church’s process and intentions, the fundamental issue remains: how does someone with such serious unresolved questions surrounding their past conduct step into a leadership role without addressing these concerns publicly? Andy’s statement from November 2023, shared through Soul Survivor Watford, expressed regret and a commitment to personal growth. However, it did not provide specific accountability or adequately reflect on the failings that occurred under his leadership.
The church also noted its support for the independent review led by Fiona Scolding KC into the events at Soul Survivor. While this is a positive step, it remains unclear how the findings of this review influenced their decision to appoint Andy or what safeguards have been implemented to prevent similar issues in the future.
This is not about a personal attack on Andy Croft or his ability to grow and change. It is about the principles of accountability and transparency, which are vital for building and maintaining trust within the church. Leadership positions demand the highest standards of integrity, and when those standards are called into question, they must be addressed with openness and humility.
I continue to urge Ps and Gs Church to provide clarity on this appointment and to demonstrate how they are prioritising the safety and trust of their congregation. The decisions we make today will shape the church’s future, and it is essential that we uphold the values of care, accountability, and integrity in all aspects of leadership.
